Abstract

393,793. Fuel-injection pumps. SULZER FR’RES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland. Aug. 8, 1932, No. 22196. Convention date, Aug. 15, 1931. [Class 102 (i).] In a fuel-injection pump the fuel is drawn through a suction port 9 controlled by an oblique edge 17 on the plunger 1 and during the forward travel of the plunger is trapped between the plunger and the accumulator piston 3 until a groove 22 in the plunger coincides with the discharge port 14, when the accumulator piston effects the discharge. It is arranged that the port 14 is again covered by the plunger before the accumulator piston and the pump plunger move away from each other on the return stroke and also that the suction port is opened when the plunger leaves the accumulator piston. The cam actuating the plunger is shaped so that the pump plunger leaves the accumulator piston late in the expansion stroke of the engine. The pump delivery is varied by rotating the plunger during the stroke so that the suction port is cut off during the stroke, or the plunger may be fitted in a rotatable sleeve so that its position at the end of one stroke is different to that at the end of the other stroke. In Fig. 6, in addition to the plunger, a piston valve 24 controls the discharge port 15 and also actuates the suction valve 29.
