Abstract

391,964. Fuel-injection pumps. SULZER FR’RES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland. April 6, 1932, No. 9901. Convention date, April 24, 1931. [Class 102 (i ).] In a fuel-injection pump of the type in which both the suction port 10 and the discharge passage 15 are controlled by the plunger, the amount of fuel injected is controlled by a byepass valve 17, which operates at the beginning of the discharge stroke. The discharge takes place through an axial passage 12 and groove 13 in the plunger and is effected by a spring- loaded accumulator piston 3. The byepass valve may be of the poppet type, as shown, or may be a piston or rotary valve. It is operated from the plunger by means of a lever 20, mounted on an eccentric 22 on a spindle 21, which is adjustable in order to vary the amount of fuel byepassed. In a modification, Fig. 5, the amount of fuel byepassed is controlled by means of a plunger 17 controlling a number of ports in a sleeve 27, which is inserted between the byepass passages 16, 18. The plunger 17 is adjustable by means of a lever 20. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the byepass valve 17 controls also the timing of injection, being formed with a recess 47 co-operating with the byepass passages 16, 18 and a recess 46 co-operating with the discharge passages 14, 15. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a modification in which the lever 20, Fig. 8, is mounted on a fixed pivot. The controlling edges of the grooves 46, 47 are formed helical, the valve 17 being adapted to be rotated in order to vary the timing of byepassing and injection. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as aceepted.
