Abstract

452,674. Fuel - injection pumps. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland. May 23, 1935, No. 15090. Convention date, June 2, 1934. [Class 102 (i)] A fuel-injection pump for a reversible internal - combustion engine is driven by a symmetrical cam 7 arranged so that the top dead centre of the pump plunger is reached at approximately the same time as that of the engine piston. The pump plunger 10 has an inclined edge 30 which closes the suction port 15 to cause delivery. The pump delivers through a non-return valve 17 to a chamber 32 connected by a pipe 18 to a spring-loaded injection valve 20. The chamber 32 forms a retardation space so that the beginning of injection does not take place until after the beginning of delivery by the pump and ends after top dead centre of the engine. Consequently the beginning of injection for forward and reverse running is approximately symmetrically placed with regard to the top dead centre of the engine. By varying the position of the plunger 33, automatically or by hand, the beginning of injection may be varied. The plunger may be replaced by valves arranged to cut out lengths of the fuel delivery pipe. The pipes to each cylinder may be arranged to contain the same volume of fuel.
