Abstract

1421761 Fuel injection pumps CAV Ltd 21 Feb 1973 [4 March 1972] 10215/72 Heading F1A [Also in Division G3] The injection timing of a fuel injection pump is controlled by a pressure-operated piston 21 operable to move e.g. a cam ring 18, the supply of pressure to the piston being controlled by a servovalve 26 responsive to pressures dependent on the quantity of fuel supplied by the pump to an associated engine and to the speed of the engine. The engine speed dependent pressure is obtained from a feed pump (10) driven by the engine and feeding through a control valve (15) which produces a pressure which varies with the square of the engine speed. This pressure is applied to the lefthand end of the servovalve 26, the latter being urged to the left by a spring 31 acting through a push rod 32. The pressure dependent on pump delivery quantity is supplied through a restriction 34 to assist the spring 31, and is taken from a point between a quantity control device (11) and the injection pump inlet. The position established by the valve 26 opens a port 27 leading to the lefthand end of the piston 21 either to low pressure or feed pump pressure. To ensure that the piston 21 is held in its "retarded" position for starting, a spring (35) may be disposed between the rod 32 and the valve 26.
