Abstract

943,200. Fuel-injection pumps; engine starting. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Jan. 29, 1960 [Feb. 4, 1959], No. 3319/60. Headings F1A and F1K. In a fuel injection pump comprising a pump plunger 22, Figs. 1 and 3, reciprocable and rotatable by means of a drive shaft 14 and cam 15 within a bore 33 to supply a metered quantity of fuel to each of the cylinders of an I.C. engine, fuel under pressure is supplied through a port 75 to a reservoir chamber 72 closed at its top by a flexible diaphragm 73. The chamber 72 communicates with the pumping chamber 34 through a plug 45 having a ring of ports 50 and an annular groove 49 controlled by an annular inlet valve plate 46 loaded by a spring 47. The presence of the flexible diaphragm ensures that during the suction stroke of the pump with the valve plate 46 unseated, the pressure within the chamber 72 is maintained substantially constant. On the compression stroke of the pump, fuel is firstly forced into a chamber 61 to urge a spring-loaded piston 57 rightwardly until arrested by a stop member 58 which member may be adjusted to determine the amount of fuel trapped in the chamber 61. After the piston reaches the stop, a spring-loaded delivery valve 42 opens to discharge a metered quantity of fuel from the chamber 34 into an axial bore 37 of the plunger which communicates through a radial port and a slot 38 with one of a plurality of ports 35 connected to the engine cylinders. The slot 38 permits communication with one of the ports during the whole of the pump compression stroke and so reduces wear on the port and slot edges. The stop member 58 may be positioned in accordance with engine demand by mechanism subject to air pressure in the intake manifold at a point adjacent the throttle valve. Leakage of fuel past the plunger 22 and piston 57 is collected in annular grooves 68, 66 respectively and passes through a port 70 to the fuel supply tank. Additional fuel for starting the engine is supplied through a line 102 connected to the inlet chamber of the fuel injection pump. The line 102 includes a restriction 104 fitted with a pressure-relief valve 101. A solenoid-actuated valve 99 normally blocks a port 106 and opens when the electrical starting system is energized and a thermally-actuated valve 100 controls the amount of fuel issuing from a jet 105 in accordance with ambient temperature.
