Abstract

1391327 Electromagnetic fuel injectors ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 26 May 1972 [28 May 1971] 24835/72 Heading F1B A fuel injection device has a hydraulically drivable pump piston 19, Fig. 1 with equal area end faces 42, 40 respectively exposed to a pump working chamber 43 and a servo pressure chamber 39, a supply valve 31 arranged between a pressure source 37 and the pump working chamber, a solenoid valve 16 controls the fuel flow from the pressure source to the servo pressure chamber and from the servo pressure chamber to a return flow line, a spring-loaded injection valve 28 whose opening pressure is greater than the pressure in the pump working chamber during the filling stroke and a throttle member 22 between the pressure source and the supply valve. The supply valve opens at a pressure which, together with the maximum filling pressure of the pump working chamber is at most equal to the fuel supply pressure whilst the maximum filling pressure is smaller than the injection valve opening pressure. Before injection the pump piston 19 is in its upper position abutting a stop 41. When solenoid valve 16 moves from the closed to the open position the ball 53 moves from seat 54 on to seat 56 and pressurized fuel flows into the servo pressure chamber 39 causing pump piston 19 to move downwardly until its other face 42 abuts stop 47. Fuel in the pump working chamber 43 is forced through bore 44 to the injection valve 24. Since the fuel pressure in pump piston face 40 is greater than the injection valve opening pressure, valve 21 is closed and fuel is injected by nozzle 23. At the end of injection solenoid valve 16 closes so that ball 53 blocks the fuel supply to the servo pressure chamber 39 and the latter discharges via seat 56. The pressure in the pump working chamber 43 drops, valve 21 opens to refill the chamber. In another embodiment a duct 74, Fig. 2 allows the escape of air or vapour bubbles when the pump piston 19 is in its lower position. In another embodiment the pump housing is lengthened.
