Abstract

997,966. Fuel injectors, reciprocating pumps. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. Oct. 2, 1961 [Dec. 1, 1960], No. 35500/61. Headings F1A and F1B. A fuel injector assembly comprises a hydraulically operable piston 43, Fig. 3, which delivers fuel at high pressure from a fuel ejection metering chamber 35 to an injector nozzle 74 and valve means operable by metering fluid pressure to admit a low pressure metered quantity of fuel to the ejection chamber and with release of metering fluid pressure to admit high pressure fluid to a chamber 37 to displace piston 43. Fuel injection system: As shown in Fig. 2 a primary pump 7 supplies fuel under pressure to a rotary-type metering pump 8. A by-pass line 13 including a pressure operated check valve 14 returns fuel at excess delivery pressure. During metering delivery periods fuel passes through line 18 to each injector 16 whilst during spill periods fuel passes through line 18a to the tank 3. A low-pressure fuel line 19 connected to the inlet line 12 of metering pump 8 and by-pass line 13 communicates through conduits 20 with each fuel injector 16. A high pressure pump 11 supplies each injector through highpressure inlet lines 22. Fuel injector operation: During spill periods pilot valve 28 is moved to stop 80 by spring 50 and residual fuel pressure in chamber 37 whilst servo piston 43 also moves to maintain the same relative position. During the metering stroke of pump 8 fuel is delivered through line 18 and passage 26 to the left-hand end of pilot valve 28 thereby displacing it to the right to a charge position opening ports A and C simultaneously and placing low-pressure line 20 in communication with annulus 35 and cavity 37a. With ports A and C open the high pressure in cavity 37a drops and piston 43, moves with the pilot valve 28 under the influence of tension spring 44, fuel being displaced from cavity 37a and transferred through port C into line 20 and through port A into annulus 35 in a quantity proportional to that metered by pump 8. When displacement of the pilot valve ceases, the piston 43 closes ports A and C and fuel trapped in cavity 37a prevents further movement of the piston 43. When pump 8 commences to spill, the pressure drop causes the valve piston to move to the left closing ports A and C and opening port B. Fluid from high-pressure line 22 and passage 32 is admitted through the passageway 54 into the cavity 37a where it moves pilot valve 28 rapidly to its stop 80 and causes piston 43 to displace fuel from annulus 35 through passages 57, 59, 76 into the nozzle chamber 70 urging nozzle plunger 66 against spring 63 and unseating valve 68 for injection. By varying the injection pressure the time of injection can be varied accordingly independently of the engine speed.
