Abstract

1,221,827. Reciprocating pumps. GIRLING Ltd. April 14, 1969 [April 18, 1968; Aug. 27, 1968], Nos. 18372/68 and 40805/ 68. Heading F1A. A pump which stalls at a predetermined output pressure comprises a piston 10 moved on its suction stroke by an eccentric or cam 32 acting on a stirrup 23, and moved on its delivery stroke by a spring 33. When the predetermined output pressure is reached, the pressure acts on piston 10 to hold spring 33 compressed and stirrup 23 out of contact with eccentric 32. As shown, piston 10 draws from housing chamber 18 via valve 16, the chamber having an inlet 21. For pumping water, the eccentric and stirrup may be of nylon. Alternatively, the piston may draw directly from an external housing connection. In Fig.4 (not shown), the stirrup has a square opening with a rounded boss or roller engaged by the eccentric. In Fig. 5 (not shown), the stirrup has a cam follower comprising a spring-loaded stem with a head engaging the eccentric, and a resilient collar under the head acting as a cushion. In Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), two co-axial pistons are actuated by a common eccentric, one stirrup fitting between bifurcated ends of the other. The pump is mounted by a flange 31.
