Abstract

677,120. Fuel injection pumps. BOSCH GES., R. Oct. 30, 1950 [Oct. 31, 1949], No. 26357/50. Class 102 (i) A reciprocating pump, particularly for fuel injection purposes, has a variable stroke plunger 20 actuated by a con stant stroke tappet 30 the latter having an abutment 28 which, after a free movement, engages the end 29 of the plunger to effect the injection stroke and a second abutment 25 which, after a free movement, engages an abutment 24 on the plunger to effect the suction stroke, the two abutments 24, 25 being relatively adjustable for varying the said free movement and hence varying the plunger stroke. The tappet is actuated by a cam 35 against a return spring 32 and its abutment 25 which may be of any shock absorbing material, has a helical surface co-operating with a helical surface 23 on the abutment 24 which is rotatable with the plunger through a rack 15 and bush 16. The abutment 25 may be replaced by a pin projecting inwardly from a wall 27. Fuel enters the pump chamber 55 through an inlet 13 and inlet valve 40 which is guided in a bore 41 and is retained therein by an eccentric disc 47 engaging in an annular groove 46 in the valve bore so that the valve may be easily removable. Injection is terminated when a byepass valve 50, Fig. 2, is opened by the wall 27 at the end of the stroke or alternatively the inlet valve may be opened in a similar manner. The quantity of fuel byepassed varies with the speed and this fuel may act on a spring-loaded piston connected to the rack for varying the stroke automatically with the speed. The end of the return stroke is cushioned by a spring 22. Lubricant is supplied to annular grooves 56, 57 through a port 14. A further annular groove 58 connected to the valve bore 41 by a transverse passage 59 prevents leakage fuel from entering the lubricant grooves. A plurality of parallel plungers may be disposed in a casing and controlled by a common rack. In another embodiment the abutment 25 of the tappet is rotated by the rack through a sleeve which is slidable over the plunger.
