Abstract
737,403. Fuel-injection pumps. C.A.V., Ltd. Nov. 6, 1953 [Nov. 29, 1952], No. 30308/52. Class 102 (1). In a fuel-injection pump, the plunger c is stepped and its smaller end projects from the pumping chamber i into the spill chamber m and has an adjustable sleeve p slidable on it to control the release from the ports w that are connected by passages u, v to the pumping chamber i. A multi-lobed cam 9 reciprocates a crosshead 6, carrying a roller 8, and a conical member 5, having a rounded nose, is carried by the plunger and maintained in contact with the cross-head 6 by a spring or springs n bearing on a plate o which engages the smaller end of the plunger. The plunger is also rotated and the passage u communicates with a port 2 leading to a. longitudinal groove 3 which registers in turn with a number of outlets g leading to the engine cylinders; a spring-loaded non-return valve y is fitted in the plunger between the passage u and port 2.
