Abstract

692,723. Fuel-injection pumps. C.A.V., Ltd. July 18, 1951 [Aug. 16, 1950], No. 20311/50. Class 102 (i). In a fuel-injection pump, delivery commences when the top of the piston closes the inlet ports j and ceases when the pump chamber g is connected to the spill chamber o by a groove w emerging from the sleeve r; the groove w communicates with ports u, v, a non-return valve x being placed in the port u. The sleeve r is pressed by a spring t against a stop q and the spill chamber o is connected to the inlet side of the pump through a port y controlled by a throttle valve 2. When, due to the increase in speed of the pump, the pressure in the spill chamber increases, the sleeve r is moved downwards against the spring t to cause a reduction in the pump delivery. The throttle valve 2 or the spring t may be adjusted to adjust the pressure at which the sleeve is moved. Alternatively a spring-loaded piston may be subjected to the pressure in the spill chamber and connected to the sleeve. The pump may be of the type wherein the piston rotates and acts as a distributer to the engine cylinders.
