Abstract

647,689. Fuel-injection pumps. C. A. V., Ltd. Aug. 21, 1948, Nos. 22113/48 and 11166/49. [Class 102(i)] In a fuel-injection pump for a multicylinder internal combustion engine a single pump plunger b closes the inlet ports r to commence delivery and an inclined edge on the recess 3 opens an inlet port to terminate delivery; the amount of delivery is varied by rotating the plunger by the rack o. The plunger is actuated by a multi-lobed cam f on a shaft h that also has a cam g for actuating a reciprocating distributer c. The plunger delivers fuel through the valve t to ports u that are connected consecutively by an annular groove w in the distributer, to the outlets v that are connected to the engine cylinders. The end of the distributer may act as a feed pump for the injection pump or may actuate through a stem an additional pump. The distributer may have a helical groove that connects with a number of outlets arranged round the cylinder and in the same transverse plane. In a modification the distributer comprises a sleeve 17 that has an annular,groove 19 and reciprocates on a fixed member 16 that has a helical groove 18 connected to the pump delivery by a passage 20. Orifices 22 in the member 16 are connected by passages 21 to the outlets 23. The distributer may be reciprocated by a lever engaging a double helical groove so that the distributer is reciprocated once for every two revolutions of the shaft.
