Abstract
4087. Philbrow, W. E. Feb. 17. Single-acting piston pumps; regulating delivery.- In internal-combustion engines using heavy liquid fuel, a charge of water is injected into the cylinder through the fuel nozzle immediately after the fuel. Both liquids may be injected by a single pump B, the plunger of which has an extension k which holds open the delivery valve during part of the suction stroke, the water in the delivery column being thereby drawn back into the pump and inducing a flow of fuel from the reservoir past a non-return valve into the injector. After the delivery valve has [closed, water is drawn into the pump through the valve n, the quantity depending upon the loading of this valve by a spring, the compression of which is controlled by hand or governor through the spindle p. The same effect may be produced by an adjustable by-pass round the delivery valve. The fuel suction valve may be arranged in and coaxial with an injection valve which is opened away from the cylinder by the liquid pressure.
