Abstract

605,158. Pumps. EMMS, P. H. Dec. 17, 1945, No. 34075. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] A manually-operated pump for supplying a supplementary charge of liquid fuel to an induction pipe to facilitate starting, comprises a body part a having a cylindrical bore b with an inlet k and outlet adjacent the inlet and a manually-operable plunger d slidable in the bore and having the end adjacent the inlet closely fitting the bore, the delivery stroke being effected by a spring e and the plunger under the action of the spring holding an inlet valve m of the pump closed when the pump is not in use. The suction stroke of the plunger is effected by a hand lever h forming part of a bell-crank lever, the short arm of which is connected to the plunger. A spring j is provided mainly to prevent rattling. A packing ring g of cork or other material compressed between washers f under the force of the spring e seals the upper end of the pump bore. The delivery of the pump passes by means of a port n and passage o to a delivery valve p and after passing through this valve passes to a delivery connection through a passage q. A stop i on the hand lever h limits the upward movement of the plunger. The pump may be arranged so that one or more strokes are sufficient to supply the amount of fuel required for starting. The lower end of the plunger may be coned or rounded. The pump may be secured to the float chamber or any other convenient part of a carburetter.
