Air vessels ; regulating delivery by by-passes.- .Surplus fuel by-passed through a valve 6 from the pressure side of a fuel injection pump 2 passes through an air vessel 14 on its return to the pump suction pipe 4. The air-vessel comprises an outer annular chamber 17, into which the fuel passage from the valve 6 opens; this arrangement prevents undue disturbance of the fuel in the air-space 19, and consequent aeration of the fuel therein. The by-pass valve 6 is actuated by a lever 13 driven from the crankshaft, the moment of opening of the valve 6 during the forcing stroke of the injection plunger 2 being controlled in dependence upon the load by a governor which rotates the eccentric 12 upon which the lever 13 is mounted. A spring 11 is placed between the valve 6 and its tappet 10 to ensure the closing of the valve 6 at the end of the pressure stroke of the plunger 2.
