Regulating delivery by by-passes and throttle valves. - Thermosta,tic apparatus for controlling the supply of water to a tank 21 mounted on the cylinders of an internal-combustion engine opens the supply valve 73 as the temperature rises owing to the reduction of the quantity of water in the tank. A reciprocating pump continuously circulates water from a tank through the pipes 67 and 78 and a one-way valve 78. A valve 73 controlling the supply to the tank 21 is opened against spring pressure by a piston 70 in a cylinder 68 filled with oil and partially submerged in the water in the tank. As the water level falls, the temperature of the cylinder 68 rises and the piston 70 is forced outwards and opens the valve 73.
