Abstract

158,348. Knott, E. W. Nov. 3, 1919. Regulating; valves. - In a two-stroke engine in which the charge is compressed in the crank chamber or in a separate pump, and for slow running part of the charge is returned to the pump during the compression stroke of the working piston through a passage A controlled by a piston valve moved by a cam in opposition to a spring, the piston valve E is moved towards the open position by a spring G against the resistance offered by a dash-pot J containing air or liquid. The piston valve E is closed by a cam H and at high speeds does not return to its open position, but at low speeds it is open during the compression stroke to an extent varying with the speed of the engine. The resistance of the dash-pot may be varied by means of a stop M which holds a check-valve K off its seat, or by means of a vent controlled by a plug-cock.
