Abstract

211,995. Brookman, R. S., and Moss & Sons, Ltd., W. Dec. 11, 1922. Regulating.-A four-stroke engine using a variable combustion chamber to suit the volume of the air or mixture charge has the whole of the charge supplied by a pump during the suction stroke; the variation is accompanied by an alteration in the amount of water circulating through the cooling system, by an adjustment of the engine valves, and if two fuels are used by changing over from one to the other. An adjustable abutment 6 forming the cylinder head is connected by outside rods to an eccentric 10 on an adjusting-spindle 11; a second eccentric 23 on this spindle is connected to a hinged quadrant 20 in which moves the pin joining the pump rod 18 to a driving connecting-rod 21. The spindle 11 is turned through the gearing 45, 47 - - 50 and the clutch relay 52 - - 54 from the governor shaft 55 according to the movement of the governor. The eccentric 23 varies the position of the quadrant to give a variable pump stroke, this being zero in one limiting position. An arm 82 on the quadrant varies the position of a throttle valve 79 in the water-circulating system. Either petrol or paraffin are supplied through the three-way cook 34. A cam disc 46 on the spindle 11 has (i) a stop 73 for acting on linkage. 74 - - 77 connected to the governor muff so as to limit the working of the governor, (ii) a cam 70 for moving the fuel cock 34, and (iii) a cam 64 for moving the bell-crank 65 used to slide the valve cam 62 on the cam shaft 61; the bell-crank 65 is also connected by a link 69 to a crank 68 and catch 84. When the valve cam 62 is moved to bring a twostep cam 63 under the exhaust valve, the latter is held open on the normal compression stroke; as fuel is simultaneously cut off, the engine then works as a brake. The catch 84, during this period, holds the water throttle valve closed. The movement of the valve cam 62 can also be effected by hand from the rod 67 through the lever 68; this lever acts through the link 41 on a cam 40 for holding the fuel pump inactive. The rod 41 may be worked independently of the lever 68 to stop the fuel supply. In a modification, carburetted air is drawn through the pump, the rod 69 being connected to a throw-over valve which can be used to cut out the carburettor and connect the pump to the atmosphere.
