[Class 135] [See also Group XXVII] In an internal-combustion engine in which the compression space is varied by a servomotor, the intake throttle valve is opened by the means for varying the compression space, but is closed directly by the servomotor controller. The variation of the compression space may be effected by adjusting the crank-shaft axis, or the length of the connecting-rods, but the means described are adjustable cylinder heads. In a multicylinder engine, cylinder heads are adjusted simultaneously by being surrounded by threaded rings which are rotated by arms 6, connected through springs 15, 16 to a rod 14. This rod is reciprocated by a servomotor comprising a piston 18 and a valve 19 controlling the flow of pressure fluid from an accumulator 20 served by a pump 21. The springs 15, 16 enable the variation of pressure during the engine cycle to assist in the movement of the cylinder heads. Depression of a pedal 24 moves the valve 19, through links 36, 31, pivoted at 37, 30, and admits pressure fluid to move the rod 14, which carries, rigidly attached thereto, a member 27, 29 ; this member allows a spring 35 to open the engine throttle valve 23 and moves the pivot 30 so that the valve 19 is closed. When the pedal 24 is released, engagement with the end of a slot 34 causes the lever 28 to close the valve 23. The pivot 37 is mounted on a diaphragm 26 subject to the induction pipe suction, but it may also be connected to a diaphragm subject to atmospheric pressure. A hydraulic clutch 38 is provided. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also other means for adjusting the cylinder heads, viz. laterally displaceable wedges, and cams rotatable on traverse shafts ; curves are given showing torque variation within a speed range regulated by a speed governor. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
