[Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iv), 7 (v), and 7 (vi).] Cylinders, adjusting clearance of ; drizing-gear. - E x c e s s i v e pressure in the combustion chamber is prevented by providing for relative movement between the cylinder head and the crank shaft, such movement being resisted by a spring and dashpot. As shown in Fig. 1 the whole cylinder block is mounted to slide in guides at either end of the crank case, movement being resisted by a spring 22 which acts through a lever 15 and a shaft 8, eccentrically mounted on links pivoted to the crank case ; the dashpot comprises a cylinder 18 filled with a fluid and a perforated piston 17 ; flexible sealing tubes 6 are provided. In a radialcylinder engine, the clearance is adjusted by varying the throw of the crank shaft by rotation of an intermediate bush 42, Fig. 6, through a link 46 and a shaft 48, rotation of which, relative to the main shaft, is effected by axial motion of a bush 49 having a cam surface 51. As shown in Fig. 7 the several bearings of the crank shaft are formed in eccentric bushes 72 which are rotated together by connecting links 74 from a shaft 76. Timing ignition; regulating.-A link 80 connected to the magneto control 79 ensures that the timing is retarded as the clearance decreases, but a spring 83 and links 79a, 85, 87, and a one-way dashpot 86 cause a sudden opening of the main throttle valve 88 to retard the timing, the dashpot 86 allowing the timing slowly to return to its normal position. Turning-gear.-To relieve the compression at starting a lever is provided which is moved with the starter-motor switch and disengages a catch which throws out of action the dashpot 18 and the spring 22.
