Abstract

487,784. Regulating; fluid - pressure servo - motor control systems ; hydraulic transmission of power. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Dec. 23, 1936, No. 35230. Convention date, Feb. 12. [Class 7 (vi)] [Also in Group XXIX] An internal-combustion engine driving, e.g. a vehicle, through hydraulic transmission gear is provided with means for regulating the fuel supply and the torque ratio of the hydraulic gear in accordance with engine speed so as to tend to maintain such speed, and means for setting the torque ratio and the engine speed so connected together that each speed setting is associated with an appropriate torque setting. The Figure shows an engine 1 supplied by a fuel pump 7 and driving through an hydraulic gear 2, a centrifugal governor 21 being connected by a lever 23 to the fuel-pump control 8 and to the valve 36 of a servomotor piston 38 controlling the hydraulic gear. A hand control 28 adjusts the loading of the governor spring 24 so as to set the speed at which the engine is to work, and at the same time adjusts a cam 30 controlling the torque transmitted by the hydraulic gear, by means of a sleeve 32 adjustable upon the valve 36. In a modification, the sleeve 32 is omitted, and the cam 30 adjusts the valve of the servomotor 38 through a lever which is connected to a second servomotor interposed between the governor and the fuel-pump control. In other modifications, the cam may adjust the fulcrum of a floating lever between the governor and the fuel control, and the hand control may act on the torque control through a lostmotion coupling which allows the speed setting to be increased beyond the maximum torque setting. A movable fulcrum may be provided in the lever which operates the torque regulator. Also an electric regulator may replace the centrifugal governor. The fuel control may regulate both the quantity of fuel and the timing of injection. In the case of explosion engines, the fuel control would regulate the supply of gas or the carburetter throttle. Direct mechanical connections may replace the servomotor controls. The torque regulator may alter the position, effective dimensions, curvature, or the depth of flow profile of the blades of the hydraulic gear. Also an hydraulic governor may be used in which the control pressure is dependent on engine speed and acts on spring-loaded pistons or diaphragms to effect the controls.
