Abstract

715,709. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. April 23, 1952 [April 23, 1951], No. 10269/52. Class 135 In regulating means particularly applicable to internal combustion engines and comprising a centrifugal governor controlling a slide valve regulating the supply of pressure fluid to a piston and cylinder type of servomotor, the valve and the servomotor are disposed coaxially with the governor and combined therewith to form a structural unit. As applied to the regulation of the fuel injection pump of a Diesel engine, the means comprise a valve timing shaft 11, Fig. 1, supported by the engine casing 10 and driven through a gearwheel 12 from the engine crankshaft, a sleeve 15 rotating with the gearwheel, and a hollow shaft 21 in screw-threaded engagement with the sleeve and formed with a disc 22 having an extension 34 constituting the cylinder of the servomotor, the piston of which is formed by the enlargement 35 of the sleeve. The disc, which is bolted to the gearwheel 26 driving the fuel injection pump, has a hollow extension 27 for the servomotor control valve 28 which is urged to the left to close a fluid supply and exhaust port 37 in the shaft 21 by the loading spring 33 of a centrifugal spaced governor the weights 30 of which are pivotally mounted between the parts 16, Fig. 2, of a cap secured to the gearwheel 12 and carrying arms 31 which press against the ends of the control valve. The cap is secured to the gearwheel, together with the sleeve 15, by bolts 14 passing through arcuate flanges 17, 18 on the cap parts and a flange 19 on the sleeve. Relative movement between the sleeve and the hollow shaft 21 is limited to the spaces x<SP>1</SP>, x<SP>2</SP> between the flanges 17, 18 and the arcuate flanges 22', 22" by which the shaft is bolted to the gearwheel 26. In the event of a rise in speed, the weights 30 fly out and the arms thereon move the control valve to the right thus uncovering the port 37 in the shaft 21 and allowing pressure fluid, e.g. oil, to pass from the bore in the shaft which communicates with an oil supply pipe 42 into the servomotor space 36. The pressure fluid forces the disc 22 to the right against the pressure of two springs 43 disposed around cylinders 44 covering ports 45 in the disc and the shaft 21 is thus rotated relatively to the sleeve 15 and advances the setting of the gearwheel 26 relatively to the valve timing shaft 11. When the speed falls, the control valve moves to the left under the pressure of the governor spring thus permitting oil in the space 36 to flow into the space 40 and thence to exhaust.
