Abstract

604,597. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. ETABLISSEMENTS E. BRANDT, and PRECISION MECANIQUE. July 17, 1945, No. 18332. Convention date, Feb. 24, 1944. [Class 135] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXVII] Means for controlling the fuel supply of a fuel injection internal-combustion engine comprises a tapered cam having an axial movement and a rotational movement, the cam controlling the regulating member of the fuel pump or pumps or injectors, one movement being governed by a device responsive to the speed of the engine and the other movement being controlled by an accelerator pedal which operates an air intake throttle. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, a control member 4 of a fuel pump (as shown) or the member which controls the delivery of a fuel injector is operated through a lever 8 and rod 7 from a cam 6. The cam is mounted on a shaft 11 and keyed to it by a key 12 so that operation of an accelerator pedal 13 which rotates the shaft 11 operates the cam and controls the fuel supply.- The shaft 11 is also connected to a butterfly valve 22 by levers 19, 21 and link 20 so that the pedal controls the air intake of the engine. A governor 23 with increasing speed shifts a shaft 18 and the cam 6 axially with respect to the shaft 11. The cam is tapered so that longitudinal movements caused by the governor displace the rod 7. This further controls the fuel supply. In a modification, a second governor is provided to prevent the speed of the engine exceeding a desired limit. This operates through a differential arrangement comprising a toothed sector controlled by the second governor and the accelerator pedal, the sector operating the shaft 11 through a pinion on this shaft. In an alternative of this modification, the governor 23 may perform both functions of controlling the fuel supply and limiting the speed of the engine. In this case, above a predetermined speed, the governor operates through a linkage and lever-arrangement upon the toothed sector. In another modification, Fig. 4, the governor acts through a servomotor to control the axial movement of the cam. Variation in the pressure in a cylinder 32 varies the axial position of the cam. The pressure is governed by a valve 31 operated by a centrifugal governor 23. The valve controls a byepass, including a cavity 36 in a valve 26, from a pipe 35 to the suction side of a pump 29. Above a predetermined speed the governor 23 overcomes a spring 27 and moves the valve 26 to the right. By reason of the oil pressure supplied by a pipe 100 a follower 30 moves with the valve and this controls the position of the cam through a toothed sector 75 and pinion 78. In a further modification, servomotors operated by the pressure and speed of flow of the air in the induction pipe may be arranged to operate on the fuel supply by a control acting on the shaft 11. This shaft can be split, Fig. 5, and the ends provided with pinions 90, 91 geared together by pinions 92, 93 on a shaft 94. The shaft 94 is carried by a member 50 which can pivot about the shaft 11. The member 50 can be controlled differentially by the pistons 53, 57 of the servomotors previously referred to. The pistons can act upon a bar 55 of the differential control by means of cams. A supercharger may be provided at the inlet side of the induction pipe and be controlled by a separate throttle valve 51 in front of the throttle valve 22.
