Abstract
485,134. Starting. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., and COLELL, R. F. Aug. 11, 1937, No. 22063. [Classes 7 (iii) and 7 (v)] Relates to means for facilitating the starting of motor-vehicle engines of the type in which fuel is injected by a pump and the speed or power is controlled by a hand lever or pedal R through the medium of a diaphragm C or piston actuating the control rod or rack B of the fuel pump, the diaphragm or piston being controlled by the depression in the induction system, which is varied by a throttle valve actuated by the lever or pedal R. In order to allow the rack to be moved further in a direction to increase the fuel supply for starting, a stop F for limiting the movement of the rack B is displaced by the movement of the lever or pedal R into its idling position. As shown, the stop F is a set screw in the end of a lever G pivoted at g and bearing against a plunger H acted on by a spring K which is stronger than the spring E bearing against the diaphragm C. An arm M on the lever G is connected by a slotted link N to an arm Q on the throttle shaft r carried by the pedal R. A spring S stronger than the spring K tends to hold the pedal R in the idling position determined by a stop T, and in this position of the pedal, the lever G is moved back to allow the spring E to move the rack B to the left beyond its normal full-load position. In a modification, the shaft r acts on the lever G by means of a cam instead of the arm Q and link N.
