Abstract

1,085,650. I. C. engine valve gear. SOCIETE D'EXPLOITATION DES MATERIALS HISPANOSUIZA. June 24, 1966 [July 19, 1965], No.28505/66. Heading F1B. The inlet and exhaust valves 4, 6, Fig. 1 of an I. C. engine are hydraulically operated by a pump 7 through an engine-driven rotary distributer 10. Pump 7 supplies oil from reservoir 33 via duct 23 to chamber 21 and thence via port 43 in rotating element 25, arcuate orifice 54 in stationary element 29 and feed pipe 50 to cylinder 14. Piston 13 is moved to open exhaust valve 6 until damper 17 engages surface 18. During the valve closing movement oil from cylinder 14 passes via pipe 51 and arcuate orifice 55 through port 46 in rotating element 36 to chamber 31 and thence via passages 32 and 34 to reservoir 33. Spring 27 keeps element 25 in engagement with element 29 and the rocking torque on element 36 is balanced by pressure oil acting through shoe 57. Inlet valve 4 is actuated similarly. Pump 7 is driven either by the engine through freewheel 59 and shaft 58 or at starting by an auxiliary electric motor 61 through freewheel 62 and shaft 60. A switch 63 is normally closed by a tachometric system 64 when the engine speed is below a desired value. On starting switch 65 is closed to energize motor 61 and at a desired oil pressure a manometric contact causes a light 67 to be shut-off to show that engine starting can commence. Pump 7 may be mounted in series or parallel with the engine oil pump or the normal engine oil pump only may be used. The system can be applied to a multi-cylinder engine.
