Abstract

1303528 I. C. engine valve gear ALFA ROMEO SpA 30 June 1970 [15 July 1969] 31745/70 Heading F1B A valve operating cam-shaft driven by the crank-shaft has means for varying the rotational position of the cam-shaft with respect to the crank-shaft comprising first and second members attached to the cam-shaft and crank-shaft respectively and capable of limited rotation with respect to one another, one of the members having a tangentially extending cylinder housing a plunger which engages a circumferentially facing surface of the other member and control means to admit or prevent the admission of pressure fluid to the cylinder. The intake camshaft 7, Fig. 1 is driven from a chain sprocket 9 through a ring 16 which has projection 17, Fig. 2 engaged in the spaces between projections 19 on a ring 18 which is keyed to the cam-shaft. When plungers 22 hold projections in the Fig. 2 position due to oil pressure in chamber 21 the cam-shaft has advanced phasing. When oil pressure is not present a spring 42 caused the arrangement to return to a delayed phasing position. Oil passes via duct 14, restriction 25 and ducts 26, 27, 28 to a non-return valve 29 and thence to chamber 21, the pressure also being communicated to chamber 31 which is closed by a cylinder 32 held stationary by an arm 33 which engages a screw 34. The system oil pressure is relieved through a hole 35 which is closable by a rotatable bush 36 which is actuable by a linkage connected to the accelerator pedal.
