Abstract

1282850 Valve gear MOTORENFABRIK HATZ GmbH 19 April 1971 [14 April 1970] 24481/71 Heading F1B Internal combustion engine in which the valves are operated by push rods includes arcuateshaped tappets, the inner and outer curved surfaces of which slide in an annular guideway formed by arcuate flanges on the engine casing, the guideway being at right angles to the axis of the camshaft. The cam-shaft 12 is mounted in the engine casing 10 and operates the push rods 14, 16 through arcuate tappets 18, 20. The tappets are guided to move in a circular path by an inner flange 10a and two outer flanges 10b and 10c. The tappets have rounded ends 18a and 20a which engage the cam and have hemi-spherical seats 18b and 20b which receive the ends of the push rods. The tappets are retained against axial movement by engagement with the face of a gear-wheel 22 mounted on the cam-shaft. Alternatively the tappets are retained by a cover plate secured to the casing, or the cover plate may itself be retained by the gear-wheel 22, there being an undulating spring between the cover plate and the gear-wheel. The tappets may form part of an oil feed system comprising an oil supply duct 10f and 10ff which feeds recesses 10h and lOhh formed in the casing. Each recess communicates with a respective pocket 10d, 10aa formed in the tappets. Oil passes from the pockets through passages 18d, 20d in the tappets to bores 14a and 16a in the push rods and thence to the rocker arms and valves.
