Abstract

To vary the position of an outer driven member 4 relative to the inner driving member 2 chambers 5 defined between the members are filled with the desired amount of oil supplied under pressure from the engine oil pump (not shown) via fill and dump valve 7. In this way the outer member 4 is advanced due to the hydraulic action of the oil against the driven member 2 thus overcoming the reflected loading on the outer member 4 due to the camshaft compressing the valve springs. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Variable timing device This device relates to the valve timing on an internal combustion engine.
The valve timing on conventional engines is normally fixed at some predetermined design compromise and is almost universally manufactured in this way.
The present device is intended to enable manufacturers to select the optimum timing angles relative to engine RPM, with the resultant benefits.
This invention will now be described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2.
The complete assembly is mounted on a drive shaft 1, the inner member 2 is keyed 3 on to the drive shaft 2, The outer driven member 4 is free to advance its relative position due to oil being pumped into the gallery(s) 5 via drilling(s) 6. The amount of advance is governed by a fill and dump valve 7 which may be controlled by a micro processor tailored to the individual engine characteristics. The unit is retained by a bolt 8 and washer 9. The oil is fed into the unit via a suitably sealed swivel 10, the complete assembly is made oil tight by using the appropriate seals. The limit of advance is dependant on gallery size, where the outer member will stop against the inner member 2. A drilling 11 is provided for venting purposes but in certain embodiments may be omitted to assist the dump speed of the oil in the unit.
Fig. 2 is shown with the outer member 4 in the fuily advanced position, the gallery 5 being full of oil. It can be seen that the outer driven member 4 is pressing on the inner driving member 2 this being the limit of angular movement. The unit is closed with plate 12 and sealed by cavity and '0' ring 13, (typical arrangement).
1. A variable valve timing device may be incorporated either by direct mounting on camshaft, or main drive shaft and may be used for gear, belt or chain drives as the unit is oil tight.
2. Any application where the previously described design principle may be employed, an obvious example being ignition timing or indexing applications.
