Abstract

611,243. Valve gear. INTEGRAL, Ltd., and WORLIDGE, R. F. April 22, 1947, No. 8893/46. [Classes 7 (iii) and 7 (vi)] A fuel injection valve supplied with fuel at constant pressure is opened hydraulically by a cam-actuated piston, the pressure impulses also bringing about the control of the fuel-injection period. As applied to a multi-cylinder engine, each injection valve 8 is held closed against the pressure of the fuel supplied through pipe 21 by a spring-loaded plunger 19, and is opened by hydraulic pressure supplied by a piston 7 to the abutting ends of the plunger 19 and needle valve 18, the piston 7 for the various injectors being arranged radially around a cam 6 comprising an annular channel in a shaft 4 in which run rollers 8 attached to the pistons. The period of injection is controlled by a piston 23 which yields against a light spring 25 absorbing the displacement of the piston 7, until it contacts a heavy spring 26 adjustably positioned by means of a screwed cap 24. Spring 26 only yields above a predetermined maximum pressure and the caps 24 may all be connected for simultaneous regulation. Lubricating oil or fuel oil are preferably used for the hydraulic fluid.
