Class 102 (i) A fuel injection pump comprises a cylinder 1 having a chamber 5 provided with a delivery valve 6, a piston 2 which is rotatable for varying the delivery and has a central bore 11 closable at its inner end by an inlet valve 12 which co-operates with a stem 13 projecting from the outer end of the piston and which is engageable by adjustable means 14 which hold the inlet valve open when the piston is at the end of its outstroke so that fuel may pass from an inlet 4 through ports 10 and an annular recess 28 into the pump chamber, the inlet valve being closed by its engagement with the piston at a predetermined adjustable point of the instroke. The piston is actuated by a cam 20 through a tappet 22 and guide member 24 which houses a return spring 27. The stem 13 abuts an inclined member 14 carried by a slidable member 15 which is movable by a pinion 19 to adjust the initial opening of the inlet valve thereby varying the beginning of injection. The plunger is rotatable by a rack 31 for varying the delivery and has a groove 30 co-operating with a byepass port 9. The pinion 19 may be adjusted manually or automatically as a function of the fuel delivery and/or the engine speed.
