872,054. Fuel injection pumps. BESSIERE, P. E. Nov 12, 1957 [Nov. 20, 1956], No. 35260/57. Class 102(1). A self regulating fuel injection pump comprises a pump piston 2 reciprocating in a cylinder 1 having a feed conduit 4 in which there is interposed a reciprocable member 9. The member 9 is loaded by a spring and is acted upon by a liquid to move the member to close the feed. In the embodiment shown the piston 2 after closing the port 3 delivers fuel through passage 14, 14a and past valve 15 to act on the member 9 causing it to close the feed conduit 4. At the commencement of the return stroke of the piston 2 the member 9 begins its upward movement under the action of the spring 18 and drives the liquid past a throttle 16 in passage 14b to the cylinder 1. As the speed of the piston 2 increases there comes a time when the member 9 does not complete its return stroke before the next delivery stroke of the piston 2 and consequently the feed of fuel to the cylinder when the port 2 is opened is throttled and reduced, this reduction increases as the speed of the piston 2 increases. In modification the passage 14 may open into the cylinder immediately above the port 3 or the feed passage 4 may lead to the passage 14. In a further modification the liquid actuating the member 9 may be supplied by a separate pump piston moving in synchronism with the piston 2 or may be formed on the piston 2.
