Abstract

752,895. Internal combustion engine gas generators; supercharged fuel-injection two-stroke engines; lubricating passages. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd. Dec. 17, 1954 [Jan. 20, 1954], No. 1674/54. Classes 7(1) and 7(2) In a two-stroke fuel injection engine of the kind driving a compressor from the output of which it is supplied with its charge of air the engine being a constantstroke engine and the compressor a centrifugal compressor, means for limiting the maximum pressure in a cylinder of the engine includes a non - rotatable plug which is sealingly slidable in the cylinder head for varying the compression ratio of the engine by a drive mechanism actuated responsively to the compressor output pressure the drive mechanism being such that its direction of movement cannot be reversed by the action on the plug of the gas pressure within the engine cylinder. The invention is particularly applicable to internal combustion engine gas generators. A two-stroke fuel injection engine 10 drives a compressor 11 and forms a gas generator for a turbine 12 for driving a road vehicle. In the engine cylinder head 10 is a slidable plug 15 by which the compression ratio may be varied. The plug is operated by a hydraulic motor 24 which in turn is controlled according to the compresser output pressure by means of a slidable valve member 28. The motor 24 drives the plug 13 through a shaft 23 worm 22 and worm wheel 19a and through screw threads 17, 18. In a multi-cylinder engine one plug is required for each cylinder and in the case of an in line multi-cylinder engine a single control spindle with worms upon it or with a continuous worm can be provided for axially positioning all plugs. There can be a number of spindles 23 drivingly interconnected by shafts 23a. The motor 24 is. supplied with engine lubricating oil by an ordinary gear wheel pump. The compression ratio may vary from 13:1 when the engine is being started to 6:1. Oil is supplied through a pipe 31 to lubricate the moving parts. Specification 752,894 is referred to.
