Abstract

274,445. Michell, A. G. M. July 15, 1926, [Convention date]. Four- and two-stroke-cycle engines; driving- gear.-Supercharging is reduced as the speed increases, and the compression space is varied in accordance with the amount of supercharging. In the engine shown, the inlet pipes 1 to the pumps p, q and their delivery pipes z to the working cylinders h, k are provided with throttles actuated by connections y to the governor r. The governor also adjusts the cylinder clearance by further connections 2 to axially movable sleeves 3, 4 bringing either of bevel wheels 5 and 6 or 11 and 12 into gear with bevel wheels 7 and 8 connected to screws 9 and 10 which adjust the crank-shaft bearings d. The throttling-devices may be adjusted by the action of the engine suction on a diaphragm controlling an electromagnetic relay. When the pumps are not charging, the resistance due to useless pumping action may be reduced by producing a partial vacuum in the pump cylinder. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), the supercharging may be controlled by a clutch coupling the engine with the pump. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
