Abstract
548,778. Pumps, regulating ; cooling charge. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., FORSYTH, A. G., and PERT, G. J. SMITH-. July 29, 1941, No. 9640. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] [Also in Group XXIX] In aircraft engines having the usual supercharger b a second supercharger m supplying its charge by a long pipe to the carburetter e, which supplies the inlet of the first supercharger b, the air inlets to the two superchargers are controlled by valves h, o the former of which is operated concurrently with the driving-gear of the supercharger m. The pipe j is preferably formed with cooling-fins x and a jacket y to which air is supplied at 11 and discharged at 12. The pumps are driven from the crankshaft through twospeed gears t<SP>1</SP>, t<SP>2</SP>, but the second pump , m may be driven by an exhaust turbine. At low altitudes the inlet valves h, o of both pumps are open, but the pump b only is driven through low gear. At a certain altitude a capsule 37 closes a switch 38 to energize a solenoid 36 and adjust the gears t<SP>1</SP> to high speed through a servomotor 26. At a further altitude stage, another capsule 45 energizes a solenoid 44 through a switch 46, whereupon the valve his closed through a servomotor 15, and hydraulic pressure is also conveyed by a pipe 41 to a piston 50 which operates a clutch w to bring the second pump m into action. A further capsule 60 at a still greater altitude moves the gears t<SP>2</SP> to high speed through a solenoid 57 and a servomotor. The inlet valve o of the pump m is then controlled in accordance with the pressure in the outlet k of the pump, by means of a capsule 54 and servomotor 51.
