Abstract

418,184. Gas turbines. HOLZWARTH, H., 7, Goethestrasse, D³sseldorf, Germany. April 27, 1934, No. 12743. Convention date, May 3, 1933. [Class 110 (iii).] An explosion chamber 1 for producing gases for a turbine 12 is scavenged after the opening of the valve 9, and a separate exhaust valve 16 is opened when the pressure in the chamber 1 is equal to the air charging pressure, or to the back pressure at the valve 9, after being just past its optimum value. The valve 9 may be closed at this point and the residual gases flow through a pipe 17 to the second stage of the turbine, or both valves may remain open. The total outlet area for the residual gases in square centimetres is greater than a value calculated from the expression 20 V where V is the volume of the explosion z chamber in cubic metres and z the scavenging period in seconds. A prime mover 20 drives a first stage compressor 18 which supplies a scavenging air valve 2 and also a H.P. stage compressor 19 which, in turn, supplies inlet air valves 3. Fuel inlets 4 are supplied by a pump 21. A rotary device 25, driven by a motor 32, has radial ports which admit and exhaust oil under pressure to lines 22<a> .... 22<d> to operate the various valves of the plant. a pump 29 supplies oil to a chamber 28 provided with an air vessel 31. The turbine 12 may be replaced by a heat-exchanger or other device. A cooling jacket 1<a> is provided. The charging air may be used for scavenging.
