Abstract

479,278. Pumps. SMIRNOFF, V. May 28,1936, No. 12056. [Class 7 (ii)] One or more compressors M, G driven from the engine, either through gearing or through an exhaust turbine E, are provided with controlling means responsive to engine operating conditions ; a further pump supplies air only at operating conditions outside the effective working range of the main compressors. A slotted plate F covering a variable number of nozzles N regulates the speed of the turbine E, being mounted on a hollow shaft carrying a pinion f. A speed-governor g, Fig. 1, and a capsule a<1>, responsive to intake or exhaust pressure, control the position of the rack k. acting through oil-pressure servomotors and linkwork connecting the rack with pistons d<1>, d<2>. At starting, some working cylinders are used as pumps. The settings of the valve P<2> and of the cock D are changed to admit air to the cylinder shown at the right of Fig. 2, the air so compressed being transferred to the air-receiver K and the valve P<1> of the working cylinder to the left. In a modification, Fig. 4, air from the compressor (not shown) which suffices for normal running is supplied to the manifolds L<1>, L<2> by conduit J. At starting the normal exhaust valve R<2> becomes an air intake and the cock P is closed until sufficient pressure is attained in the manifold L<2>. A valve Q then lifts and simultaneously the valves R<2>, P are reset, and the temporary pump cylinder reverts to normal working conditions. The pump M may be driven through variable-speed gearing. Heated compressed air may be supplied when necessary to the air-receivers L<1>, L2.
