Abstract

184,177. Lafitte, T. Aug. 2, 1921, [Convention date]. Valves; regulating. - In multicvlinder engines having the crank case divided into separate chambers each communicating with two cylinders, valve devices are provided whereby the chambers mav be connected in pairs by means of adjustable ports so as to compensate for variations of atmospheric pressure, as in aircraft engines. Fig. 1 shows a four-cylinder engine having the crank case divided by a partition 11, 12 into a chamber 13, 14, 15 common to the two cylinders 1, 4, and a chamber 16, 17 common to the cylinders 2, 3. A rotary valve 19 controls admission of air to the crank chambers, and transfer of such air to the cylinders past a carburettor 26 and through a pipe 23 and inlet valves 27, the contents of the chamber 13, 14, 15 being admitted to the cylinder 1 on one down-stroke of the pistons 5, 8, and to the cylinder 4 on their next down-stroke, and the chamber 16, 17 similarly supplying the cylinders 2, 3 alternately. Regulation of the pressure of the mixture supplied to the cylinders is obtained by means of a cock 29 having tapering ports 30, 31 which, as the cock is turned, more or less connect the chamber 13, 14, 15 to the chamber 16, 17. The cock may be adjusted by a handle 32, or automatically according to the varying atmospheric pressure by a spring-pressed piston 35 on the transfer pipe 23, and also, if desired, by a centrifugal governor. The piston 35 may, in addition, be used to uncover ports connecting the pipe 23 with the atmosphere. The rotary valve 19 mav be replaced by slide valves or by automatic valves. The inlet valves 27 may have balancing-pistons fitted on their stems.
