Abstract

578,147. Pumps for gases. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., and SAMMONS, H. Dec. 6, 1944, No. 24383. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] An I.C. engine A is supplied with air compressed in two stages, a low pressure axial flow compressor M and a high-pressure centrifugal compressor E. The former is driven by a turbine J and the latter by the I.C. engine. The two shafts H, C may be connected by a clutch F. The turbine is driven by the exhaust gases of the engine which may be further energised by fuel burnt in a combustion chamber L and extra air may be supplied to this chamber from the delivery of the centrifugal compressor. The I.C. engine drives an air screw B through gearing D and the turbine drives a contra-rotating air-screw O<2> through gearing H<1>, N'. At normal speeds the clutch F is open and the turbine and I.C. engines run at their own speeds. At low speeds, the exhaust of the I.C. engine is not sufficient to make the turbine effective and a speed responsive device P closes the clutch F so that the I.C. engine drives the axial flow compressor.
