Abstract
612,817. Gas turbine plant. ELLIOTT CO. April 27, 1945, No. 10664. Convention date, April 28, 1944. [Class 110 (iii)] In a continuous combustion gas turbine plant comprising two or more turbine stages and a corresponding number of compressor stages, the low-pressure compressor is driven by a turbine which is not the low-pressure turbine and the other turbine or turbines are used to drive the other compressor or compressors and to provide useful power. Power is regulated by regulating the admission of fuel to the burners and the arrangement ensures a supply of air in proportion to the load and, consequently, a substantially constant temperature before the turbines. As shown in Fig. 1, a high-pressure turbine 6 drives a low-pressure compressor 3 and a lowpressure turbine 12 drives a high-pressure compressor 9 and a propeller 33. The compressors are of the meshing screws type. Fuel is burnt in a combustion chamber 18 and in are-heating chamber 24 and is supplied by multi-cylinder Diesel injection pumps with manual or automatic control 22, 25. There is an inter-stage cooler 13 and an economizer 16. For starting, the high-pressure compressor is byepassed by conduit 35 and the high-pressure turbine discharges to atmosphere at 38. A three-stage plant is described in which the low-pressure compressor is driven by the intermediate turbine, the other two compressors are on the same shaft as the high-pressure turbine and the latter is coupled to the low-pressure turbine for providing useful power. There is a combustion chamber before each turbine.
