Abstract
682,003. Motor power plant; elastic fluid turbines. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Sept. 29, 1950 [Oct. 21, 1949], No. 27135/49. Class 110 (iii) [Also in Group XXXIII] In a marine power plant for driving two or more screws 10, 20 wherein each screw is driven by a set of intermediate- and low-pressure turbines such as 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, 13, 13<SP>1</SP> and 22, 221, 23, 23<SP>1</SP> respectively, the turbine sets are arranged in parallel with a single high-pressure turbine 31 which is coupled through electric transmission means to drive the screws or a further load shaft or both screws and load shaft. The screws are also driven by electric motors 15, 25 and Diesel engines 14, 24. The electric motors are energized by a generator 30 which is driven by the steam turbine 31 and a low-pressure gas turbine 32. The gas turbine plant also comprises a compressor 34, an air heater 35, a combustion chamber 36 and a high-pressure gas turbine 37. The steam generator 33 is fed with exhaust gasses from the Diesel engines and the gas turbine plant. In a marine power plant having an odd number of screws the turbines 31, 32 either provide all the power for the central screw or assists in driving all the screws. The turbine 32 may drive the load shafts independently of the turbine 31 through suitable gearing. Should the electrical transmission system fail the intermediate- and. low-pressure turbine sets are supplied directly from the generator through pressure reducing means and the gas turbine 32 is by-passed by a valve 38.
