Abstract

576,042. Generating combustion products under pressure. HALLOWELL, E. Feb. 8, 1944, No. 2323. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] Gases generated in an oscillating column gas generator such as described in Specification 574,554, or other suitable I.C. engine, are led into a diverging duct 47 of about the same acoustic period as the duct 41 and thence to an impulse turbine 40. Compressed-air from a compressor 18 driven by the turbine 40 is heated in an economizer 12 and passed to a chamber 21 surrounding the ducts 41, 47. Here it is further heated and passes out to the rear of the turbine 40. The heated air passes through the turbine in the reverse direction during the low-pressure part of the acoustic cycle and mixes with the combustion products. The exhaust of the turbine 40 passes to a pressure-equalising chamber 10 and thence to a turbine 11 which exhausts to the economizer 12. The turbine drives a low-pressure compressor 14, in series with the compressor 18, and an electric generator 15. A cooler 17 is placed between the compressors 14, 18. The gas generator is supplied with compressed air through pipe 52. In starting, highly explosive fuel is supplied by a carburettor 25. When the air pressure rises, it acts upon a.piston 33 to open a valve 31 through which normal fuel is supplied. The valve 22 is closed during starting. Specification 574,552, [Group XXVI], is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
