632,493. Gas turbine plant. FRANCIS, E. L. M. (Inffeld, K. L. M. von). Dec. 31, 1947, No. 35435. [Class 110(iii)] In a gas turbine plant, air and blast furnace gas compressed, respectively, in multi-stage axial-flow compressors 29, 30, 31 and 27, 28 are burnt in two pairs of valved explosion chambers 4, 5, 6, 7 and delivered to turbines 1, 2 which exhaust to a dual flow drum turbine 3. The exhaust from turbine 3 is used to generate steam supplied to a steam turbine 36. The combustion chambers of a pair delivers to a separate impulse turbine with two blade rings, e.g., 8, 9 on a common shaft. One pair of impulse turbines drives the gas compressors 27, 28 and the other pair, the air compressors 29-31. Scavenging air from the combustion chambers is admitted by valves 18-21 to the nozzle chamber of the turbine 3. For starting, the pipe connections of the gas pump 28 are altered to permit it to operate as an air pump for the chambers 4, 5 and the left-hand set is then run up to speed through a fluid coupling 34 by an electric motor 33. The gas turbine 3 and steam turbine-36 drive an electric generator 35.
