Abstract
589,178. Gas turbines. SULXER FRERES SOC. ANON. March 16, 1945, No. 6688. Convention date, March 18, 1944. [Class 110 (iii)] In a gas turbine plant in which power gas is generated in a combustion chamber fed with air by a turbine-compressor combination working in a closed circuit and is led to a power turbine exhausting to the atmosphere, the power generated by the power turbine is varied by varying the basic pressure in the closed circuit. For high load that basic pressure is the delivery pressure of a make-up compressor taking in air at atmospheric pressure and for low load the intake air is at a pressure reduced by extracting energy from the air in a useful power turbine. The power gas generator comprises compressors 1, 3, surface heater 8, turbine 10 and heatexchanger 4. Part of the air compressed passes to a burner 14 of the heater 8 and the products of combustion drive a power turbine 16 geared to a ship's propeller 24. For high load, a make-up compressor 19 takes in atmospheric air at 33. For low load, the air is taken in at 26, heated by the exhaust of the main power turbine 16 in an exchanger 17, caused to do useful work in an air turbine 25 and then passes through a cooler 28 to the make-up compressor 19. The air turbine is driven through a hydraulic or other coupling 29. A starting motor 21 may be used also to assist the turbine 10. Specification 574,921 is referred to.
