Class 7(i) [Also in Group XXVI] In a power plant comprising at least one turbine, one compressor and one hot gas reciprocating engine the hot gases generated in the combustion chambers of the turbine are used to heat indirectly the working medium of the reciprocating engine before passing to the turbine. In Fig. 1a, a turbine 1 drives a compressor 2. The compressed air is heated at 5a by the turbine exhaust and is burnt with fuel in a combustion chamber 5. The products of combustion drive the turbine 1 and air for a reciprocating engine 7, which provides useful power, is heated indirectly in the chamber 5. The combustion products may ,give up their heat in an exchanger to air which is there used in the turbine 1. Alternatively, the turbine 1 provides useful power and the engine 7 drives a reciprocating or other compressor. The turbine may also drive a pre-compressor. The engine 7 may be replaced by several smaller engines each driving a compressor. The compressors may be arranged in parallel or series-parallel. The turbine may be in two stages with re-heating. The combustion products from chamber 5 may be augmented by a second combustion chamber in parallel with the chamber 5. Or, the second combustion chamber may provide gas for a second useful power turbine. In Fig. 6, the combustion products from chamber 14 are used in two turbines, 50, 16 which provide useful power at 56 and A. The turbine 50 also drives a compressor 51 which deliveres to a compressor 11 driven by the engine 10. The turbines 50 and 16 may be interchanged and the lowpressure one may use gas tapped from an intermediate point of the other. The turbines 50, 16 may be in parallel. In Fig. 8, air from a compressor 71 is burnt with fuel in two combustion chambers 63, 65 in series and the combustion products are used in a turbine 72 which drives the compressor 71. The chamber 63 provides hot gas for the engine 10 which drives a compressor 11. The chamber 65 heats air or other gas in a closed circuit which includes a useful power turbine 16. The combustion chamber 65 may be replaced by a heat-exchanger in which heat is transferred to the closed circuit air of turbine 16 from the combustion products leaving the chamber 63. In that case, the turbine 72 is omitted and the compressor 71 is driven by the reciprocating engine 10.
