Abstract

716,274. Gas turbine plant. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. March 28, 1952 [March 30, 1951], No. 7411/51. Class 110(3) [Also in Group XIII] A gas turbine power plant comprises an axial flow compressor 28, a combustion system, shown as a single combustion chamber 29 and two independent turbine rotors 30, 31. The rotor 31 drives the compressor and useful shaft power is taken off from the shaft 33 which is driven by the turbine 30. Combustion air entering at 34 is compressed in the compressor 28 and is then heated in an annular heat exchanger 36 (see Group XIII) encircling the compressor after which the hot air flows through connections 37 to the combustion chamber 29 exhaust gases from which drive the turbines 30, 31 before passing through the heat exchanger 36 to preheat the combustion air and thence through exhaust ducts such as 39. The heat exchanger 36 may alternatively encircle the turbine or turbines instead of the compressor. Fuel for the combustion system of the plant may also be preheated in the heat exchanger 36.
