A gas turbine plant comprising a standard turbine group consisting of a main compressor' the compressed air from which is heated by a gaseous waste-heat carrier such-as exhaust gases from an industrial process and then expanded in a main turbine driving the compressor and supplying useful work has an auxiliary turbine group, mechanically independent of the standard group and consisting of a turbine driving a compressor, connected to the standard group so that the main power turbine discharges into the inlet of the auxiliary turbine which exhausts into the auxiliary compressor which in turn discharges into the intake of the main compressor The expansion ratio of the standard turbine group in an installation without reheating should be below 4 or should not substantially exceed 4. In an installation with reheating, the expansion ratio of the individual expansion stages should not exceed these limits. The purpose of the invention is to increase the useful power obtained from the waste heat carrier. The compressed air is heated in the heater 1 by a heat carrier such as the exhaust gases from an industrial process, and then expanded in the turbines 2, 3. The turbine exhaust is cooled in the heat exchanger 4 by the compressed air entering the heater 1 and then further cooled in a cooler 11 before entering the compressor 5. The compressed air from the compressor 5 is cooled in a cooler 12 and then further compressed in a compressor 6, where it is intermediately cooled in a cooler 13 before passing through the heat exchanger 4 to the heater 1. The turbine 2 drives the compressor 6 and the electric generator 7. The power delivered by the turbine 3 is fully consumed by the compressor 5. By-pass pipes 15, 17 around the turbine 3 and compressor 5 are fitted with control valves 14, 16 to enable these powers to be balanced. If desired, the turbines may be of radial flow and the compressors of axial flow construction.
