723,419. Gas-turbine plant. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. May 21, 1952 [June 8, 1951; June 28, 1951; Sept. 13, 1951], Nos. 13703/51, 15362/51 and 21555/51. Class 110 (3). A gas-turbine plant providing a continuous supply of hot compressed air comprises a rotary air compressor the discharge of which is divided into separate streams, one stream of which is passed directly through a turbine and then through an indirect air heater to provide the hot-air supply, a heat source for the air heater and a combustion chamber, supplied with a second stream of air from the compressor, feeding a turbine which drives the compressor. In the arrangement shown, Fig. 1, the air compressed by the compressor 1 and heated in a heatexchanger 2 after which it is divided and part is heated in a heater 7 and then expanded in a turbine 4. The exhaust of the turbine 4 is reheated in the heater 7 and then led to the point of use through the duct 8. The second stream is led to a combustion chamber 6 and burnt with combustion gas supplied by a compressor 9, the combustion gases being led to a gas turbine 11 driving the compressor 4, 9. The exhaust of the turbine 11 is passed to the heater 7 in which combustible gas and air supplied by the conduits 19, 20 is burnt. The exhaust gases from the heater are utilized in the heat exchanger 2. In a modification, the size of the heater 7 is reduced by omitting the heating of the air before it enters the turbine 4. In another modification, Fig. 3, the size of the heater 7 is further reduced by putting it under pressure. In this the combustion chamber 6 is so arranged so that the gases leaving it pass through the heater 7 before entering the turbine 11. A further combustion chamber 10 is provided to reheat the gases. To improve the part-load performance air may be passed through a connection 12 controlled by a valve 13. In a modification the combustion chamber 10 has its own combustible gas and air supply and the combustion gases are mixed with the combustion gases leaving the heater 7. In the second Provisional Specification there is described an arrangement the same as that described with reference to Fig. 3 but with the air turbine 4 omitted.
