Abstract

750.634. Gas turbine plant. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Dec. 1, 1954 [Dec. 3 1953], No. 33657/53. Addition to 723,419. Class 110(3) A gas turbine plant for providing a continuous supply of hot compressed air comprises a rotary air compressor the discharge of which is divided into separate streams, an air turbine through which one stream is expanded to provide the air supply, a combustion chamber to which another stream is fed and used to heat one of the heat storing elements of a regenerative heating apparatus whilst the other or another element is heating the air supply, a second combustion chamber also supplied with air from the compressor which feeds together with the first combustion chamber, a gas turbine driving the compressor and means to interchange the heat storing elements between the air supply and the discharge of the second combustion chamber. Air compressed in the compressor 1 is heated in a heat exchanger 2 and then divided into two streams. One stream is expanded in a turbine 4 and then passes through one 22 of a pair of Cowper stoves 21, 22 to ducting 8 leading to a blast furnace. The other stream is fed into a combustion chamber 6 which heats the second 21 of the two stoves. The discharge of the stove 21 is further heated in a combustion chamber 10 which supplies working fluid to the gas turbine 11 driving the compressor 1. The combustion chambers 6, 10 are fed with fuel gas by a compressor 9 also driven by the turbine 11. The two stoves 21, 22 are provided with interchanging ducts (not shown) by which their positions in the circuit may be changed periodically. The stoves may have heating means additional to the combustion chamber 6. A duct with a throttle valve may be provided between the compressor discharge duct 5 and the outlet of the combustion chamber 10 for part load control. In a modification, the combustion chamber 10 is arranged in this duct. The invention may be applied to other processes such as chemical processes in which regenerative heaters other than Cowper stoves are employed.
