A method of operating regenerative gas or air heater apparatus comprising at least two regenerative heaters 1, 2 adapted to be alternately heated by the combustion of heating agents e.g. stack fuel and air, wherein during the heating of one of the heaters, the waste gas flowing from the heater is led to a recuperator 12 and gives up its heat to at least one of the heating agents prior to combustion (heat being added to the waste gas in an adjustable amount to maintain a constant temperature in the preheated heating agent). As shown, hot combustion products from a combustion chamber 4 enter the cupola of a Cowner stove 1 or 2 being heated and waste gas exits through port 6. Ports 6 are connected by duct 9 which is connected through a conduit 21 to the recuperator 12. Stack fuel and air are introduced into the recuperator in ducts 13, 14 and flow out to the combustion chamber through pipes 15, 17; 16, 18 respectively. Pipes 15, 16 are fitted with thermostats 22 which control the supply of air and fuel to a burner 23 situated in conduit 21 which is used to add heat to the waste gas before it enters the recuperator. Air to be heated enters the stove on blast through an inlet connection 7, and heated air is discharged from a port 8 in the combustion chamber 4.
