Abstract
595,150. Regenerators. POTTS, H. E. (Tesch, E. T. A.). Feb. 22, 1945, No. 4428. [Class 64 (i)] In gas heating apparatus in which the gas to be heated passes through a recuperator 3 in which it is heated by conduction of heat through separating walls from flue gases received from one of a plurality of reversible regenerators 1, 2, and subsequently passes through another of these reversible regenerators, the recuperator 3 has a variable auxiliary heat supply, e.g., a burner 14 which heats the gas to an extent such as to compensate, at least in part, for variations in the heating effect of the reversible regenerator through which the gas subsequently passes. Additional compensation may be obtained by adding heated gas from another source through a pipe 38 to the gas leaving the recuperator 3 or, if desired, leaving the regenerator, or adding cooler gas to the heated gas after it leaves the recuperator and before it enters the regenerator, or to the regenerator in use to heat the gas, through the inlet 36, 37, or to the outlet 9, 10. The addition of heating or cooling gas may be automatically regulated, e.g., by thermostatic elements and servo motors. The fuel supply to the burner 14 is controlled by a valve 25 operated by a servo motor 24 responsive to thermostatic devices 16, 15 in the outlets 9, 10 of the reversible regenerators. If desired, part only of the gas heated in the recuperator may be further heated in the regenerator, the remainder being used for another purpose. The reversible regenerators may be heated by very hot gases either produced by combustion within them, e.g., by burners 11, 12, or introduced into them.
